Area/surface measurement

Assign the area tool to one of the mouse buttons. You can now draw a contour by holding/pressing the mouse button down and drawing, or by moving the mouse pointer to the next position and drawing a straight line by single clicking the mouse button. Or use a combination of both.

Complete the contour by double clicking. Now a line is drawn from your last drawn point to the start point. The surface area measurement is presented to you in square pixels. Use the calibration tool to get the numbers in square millimeter.

To correct any drawing errors whilst drawing the tool, press BackSpace or the left arrow on your keyboard to erase your drawn points one-by-one. Or press escape to cancel the entire contour. This is only possible while drawing.
To delete a completed area measurement, move your mouse pointer over the number displaying the square mm or pixels (the contour line is displayed dashed) and double click. This only works if the area tool is active, ie. assigned to a mouse button. Or, delete all the area measurements via the menu (Tools/Delete areas).

It is possible to change to line thickness or the colour of the line after you have drawn it. Make sure the area tool is active (assigned to a mouse button) and move the mouse over the number displaying the square mm or pixels: the corresponding area line is displayed dashed. To change the colour, press CTRL+2 or CTRL+3. To change the line thickness, press CTRL+4 or CTRL+5. There are 16 area colours available and the next area will be drawn in a different colour.
You can also move the text displaying the square mm or pixels: move your mouse pointer over the text, press the area-mouse button and drag it.
See the settings to change the default thickness of the area line. However, while drawing, a line of only 1 pixel thick is used for accuracy.

Before you draw a contour, maximize the image window and zoom in to the area as much as possible. This is especially important for large images which may have been resized to fit on to your screen. Check the 'Zoom' indication, bottom left of the image. If this is less than zero, try to enlarge your area of interest as much as possible.
